Counting a poem line by line

Start with one line at a time. Read it naturally, note the count, then compare it with the surrounding lines. A table of line totals can reveal an intentional pattern or show where a draft has become crowded.

Meter is more than a syllable count

Syllable count measures how many spoken beats a line contains. Meter also considers which beats are stressed and how they repeat. A line can have the expected number of syllables and still sound unlike the meter of a sonnet or limerick.

Poetic forms use different rules

A classroom haiku often uses a 5-7-5 pattern, a limerick commonly uses three longer lines and two shorter lines, and a sonnet has its own line, rhyme and meter traditions. Use the count as one piece of revision evidence rather than a complete form validator.

Pronunciation and poetic choice

A poet may choose a pronunciation that fits the voice of the poem. Words such as “fire” can be heard with one or two syllables, and connected speech may compress a sound. Read the line aloud before changing a word simply to satisfy a number.
