Counting Syllables Worksheet
Use these worksheet-style activities to practice counting syllables. Students can clap and count syllables, say each word slowly and write the number of beats they hear.
Clap and count
Say each word at a comfortable speed. Clap once for every spoken beat, then write 1, 2 or 3 beside the word before checking the answer key. For younger students, tap the table or touch a finger for each clap.

Answer key
The words are grouped by the counts used in this practice set: 1 syllable is one beat, 2 syllables are two beats and 3 syllables are three beats. Pronunciation can change a count for some words, so encourage students to explain what they hear.
1 syllable: cat, dog, book, sun. 2 syllables: business, chocolate, every, apron. 3 syllables: banana, elephant, butterfly, family.
Teaching tips
