How to Count Syllables in a Word
Count the spoken beats
To count syllables in a word, focus on pronunciation instead of spelling. Count the vowel sounds you hear: elephant has three beats, el-e-phant, while choir is often spoken as one.
Useful rules
Vowel groups often make one syllable, final silent e usually does not add a syllable and consonant plus le endings can add a beat, as in syllable. Exceptions are common, so spoken sound matters most.
